Why does Unreal editor keep crashing on OSX?

Hi, I’m trying to test out Unreal and Unity and educate myself on both and decide which to move forward with. Unreal Editor keeps crashing though. Last night it wouldn’t even start, it just crashed on launch every time and after a restart it started working. Today it’s back to crashing on every launch. I haven’t been able to create and save a project yet so the project is just a new copy of the first level design tutorial in blueprint.

I’ve seen a number of people have been having issues with it crashing on OSX but I can’t find any resolution that works. They either trail off and the thread is closed or they’re old threads and people have recommended installing Yosemite, which I can’t do since I’m at El Cap now and can’t roll back. Otherwise the crashes are deemed to be spec related due to integrated Intel HD or iris pro gpu’s.

System specs:
UE 4.11.2
Late 2013 iMac
OSX 10.11.4 El Capitan
3.5 Ghz i7
24 GB DDR3 RAM
Nvidia GTX 780 M

Thanks!

Hello Squigglfish,

When your editor crashes, does a Crash Reporter window show up? If so, could you copy/paste the contents from it and post them here? Also, when exactly does it crash? Is it after you create your project with the Unreal Project Browser, or is it even before that?

Hi ,

I got to try it out again today. It did open for about 10 minutes but crashed again. I wasn’t doing anything with it at the time, it was just running in the background. I had the very first environment tutorial open and had only moved the camera around a bit. The crash log is attached. link text

Thank you for that information. After looking up the callstack in our database, it seems like this is an issue that has already been reported and is in the process of being fixed. Unfortunately I can’t suggest anything to fix this at this time other than reverting back to using 4.10 in the meantime.

I’ll be sure to let you know of any updates and I’ll post here if I need any additional information that may help in fixing this problem.

Thanks .

Is there a KB article on how to roll back?

There isn’t really an option to roll back. You’ll need to install the 4.10 engine again if you don’t have it installed. As for rolling back your projects, you may be able to migrate the content back if you don’t still have the older versions of said projects, assuming they were originally created in 4.10.

Hi there,
I’m on a very similar ‘mission’ - to get a handle on and test Unity and Unreal Engine and decide which will be the better option for building ‘distance learning’ projects… And I am also having repeated crashing on my 'late 2015 iMac - 27" 5k Core i5 32Gb RAM …
This last crash moments ago, actually shut down my iMac and I’m not getting any crash report.
I thought UR4 would be the better option with the ‘Blueprint’ facility, but the repeated crashing suggests to me that Unity is my only choice.

Hello rossenrode,

This seems like an unrelated crash to the one originally reportedby Squigglfish. Could you make your own answerhub post in our Bug Reports section so we can have someone look into the problems you’re experiencing?
