Constant spontaneous framerate drops

Greeting fellow devs !

I’ve just started working with UE4 ,figuring its functionality and workflow out and I’ve run into a huge performance related problem. So I opened up the FPS example project and started experimenting with blueprint scripts on the character ,only to experience immensely frequent ,heavy FPS drops of very short duration each (less than a second) in the editor preview ,that would then carry on even after I stopped running it. They kind of felt like spontaneous freezes. I then tried opening a brand new FPS example project and running it untouched ,noticing that it ran smoothly with no problem ,until the point I would again touch any script. Do you have any ideas for the source of the problem ? It’s worth noting that I am using an AMD GPU and I’ve heard that Unreal runs extremely bad on AMD based systems (be it the CPU ,GPU or BOTH). I’ll have to switch to Unity and I really don’t want to ,should this be a hardware related problem up to Epic to fix. I’m not going to spend hundreds of euros to change my already excellent GPU if Unreal doesn’t like it.

Here’s the full list of my system specifications:

CPU: i5 4690 3.5GHz

MB: Asrock H97m Pro 4

GPU: Sapphire R9 290 Vapor X OC

RAM: 2x 4GB G.Skill Ripjaws X 1600MHz CL7

HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 7200RPM 64MB Cache

PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 750B2 750W

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

AMD Drivers: Latest

UE4 Version: 4.11.2

Hey Koskok, when I had that issue it was because I was on google hangout/teamviewer/recording… so just pointing out that the aforementioned could be a culprit if you are doing that.

I instinctively closed every single program I had running at that time besides the Editor (even my Antivirus) leaving UE4 run along with only system processes. The problem didn’t seem to cease there though. Anyway ,thanks for taking time to reply :).

Hi ,

We have had quite a few reports of the latest AMD drivers having issues for some people. Try rolling back to the Crimson 15.7.1 drivers and see if that fixes the issue for you.

Here is some more info on how to safety roll your AMD drivers back.
