Why does my material only affect the base LOD?

I changed the material of the field grass that came with the Kite Demo assets so that it reacts on the level blueprint. It has three LODs of which only the base LOD actually applies the changes in the material. Knowing only little about LODs and material instances, I tried assigning the changed material to all LODs, but it didn’t fix the problem so I changed it back to the original version, as seen in the screenshot. How can I fix this?
