Better tooltip for Translucency Sort Priority + Separate Translucency

I tried to use “Translucency Sort Priority” on my Mesh, but it didn’t work. Then I discovered that you had to set the material to use “Separate Translucency” for it to work. Could you update the tooltips on both the “Translucency Sort Priority” option of the mesh and the “Separate Translucency” of the Material to make this clear to the users?

I suspect that “Separate Translucency” has more intricate results that are not well documented. What is the benefit for using it or not. I suspect that “Separate Translucency” is done in a separate rendering pass, but what is the effect on performance and what are the visual results. I suspect that the shadowing and lighting is affected. Can this be described in documentation?

Thanks.

Hey isgoed,

I went ahead and entered a request ticket to have the tooltips updated so they reflect their dependence on one another. For reference the ticket entered is UEDOC-2988. Hopefully we can get these tooltips updated soon, but I cannot provide a timeframe in which that will occur currently.

In regards to your question about the effect on performance, when you uncheck ‘Separate Translucency’ you are allowing that material to be affected by Depth of Field. This post processing effect can become performance heavy depending on the type and intensity (i.e. an aggressive Bokeh DoF). If your translucent material is somewhat complex, like water for example, having it affected by DoF is going to have a performance hit.

Let me know if you have further questions or need additional assistance.

Cheers,
