Severe performance drop for PIE when blueprint editor windows are open

Recently, I started working on a fairly large map, about 16km x 16km. I experienced fairly severe performance drops, and originally I thought it was the map itself. However, upon further investigation I discovered that when I closed my editor windows other than the main game window, my framerate jumped from about 18 to around 40. This same performance drop actually happens for all blueprint editor windows when they are open. The actual in game performance is fine with them closed. I was working on this same project in 4.10 with no issue. I should mention that I did turn off live nodes, etc. in the material editor and this did not make a difference. I am running a multi monitor setup, i7-4790k GTX 970 graphics.

Hello,

  • Could you please provide your dxdiag?
  • Is this also occurring in a clean project with no additional content?
  • Does this occur with only one tab open, or only with multiple tabs?

My dxdiag is attached. link text
The performance drop is a function of how complex the blueprint is in the open tab. The problem occurs with only one tab open and multiple tabs. I should mention that it seems to be more severe when I open the window on a monitor that is not my main monitor. I thought this might be because of the check box “reduce cpu usage when editor is in background” but unchecking that did not seem to make a difference. It does not happen as severely in a clean project with no additional content, but the drop is there.

What sort of results are you seeing in a clean project, exactly?

In a 3rd person blueprint project, 120 fps with no windows open. With even one window open that drops to 60. If i am looking at two windows at the same time, it drops to 30 or 40. In my game project, where the blueprints are much more complicated, I cannot have more than 2 windows visible at a time or the game is simply unplayable.

Hello,

I have been able to reproduce the performance drop, and have entered a bug report, UE-31074. Thank you for your report.

Have a great day

Hello! Has there been any progress on this issue? Thanks!
