Launcher won't start off external hard drive

I’m a Mac user, and my startup drive doesn’t have enough space to install UE4. I learned that I could put the launcher on an external hard drive, and that would enable the editor to download to it as well. However, when I try to launch the Epic Games Launcher, it says it’s downloading, than restarts, and does that about four times, then it tells me that the self-update has failed. Error code SU-FC02. Why can’t I start the launcher from my external hard drive? It has plenty of storage left, about a TB, so storage isn’t the issue.
