Why do my particles have rough edges?

Hey, so I’ve been creating some particles recently and I just ran into a strange problem. I’ve got a simple soft circle (edges blended out to nothing) material that I am using as a texture for a particle, and when I was testing to see how it looked in the world, I noticed that the particles had rough edges when they were in front of geometry, enough for me to notice from quite a distance away, and that in front of black nothingness, the roughness was less but still visible. Double checked in the particle editor and the particles dont have the rough edges in it. I tried changing the material to a hard edged circle, but it didn’t help any. Heres a pic of the problem i’m seeing:

Anyone know what is wrong, please let me know or ask me for more info if you need it.

Could you post an image of your material network, and your texture settings.

Theres no actual texture image used in this material. Just used the nodes to make a circle.
Here ya go:

Hi Knobbynobbes -

So I am testing your material setup and I am not seeing teh fuzzy edge on the particles here, which leads me to believe it might be in the particle setup itself. Can you post a screenshot of your Cascade nodes so I can try to match them up with what I have.

Thanks

Eric Ketchum

Here are all the nodes that are associated with the portion of the particle that I see with rough edges. If you need the rest, just let me know (there are many parts to this one particle, so I left most of those out). Btw, you should allow for bigger file sizes to be uploaded, had to shrink down my image many times to get it to be small enough in kb.

Hey Knobbynobbes -

So I have reproduced you Material and Particle system and I can see a little bit of a fuzzy edge, but it is honestly not extreme and seems more to be caused by the refresh rate and animation on my screen than a problem with the system or material.

That being said, I did try the same particle system using a White Dot texture as opposed to the Radial Gradient function and it got a marginally sharper result, but not enough to be of significant note. My white dot texture was 256x256 which is still huge for a particle system, I normally work in much smaller texture sizes. If it is a concern though you could try to test the results with a much larger texture, but it will be a performance hit which may make it not worth it.

Thanks

I am closing this post for tracking purposes, if the problem should have persisted or return, feel free to post again.

Thank You
