How to properly edit animations?

I recently exported the standard Idle animation for the Third Person Template Character. I opened it up in Blender, made a couple changes (i wanted to make the character hands stay closed as if he was holding an item or a weapon), exported it and then imported it again in unreal engine 4, the problem is the character is now laying with his legs crossed, he’s basically in a random position. I tried exporting the animation immediately after importing in Blender, without making changes, same exact result. What did I miss? isn’t there a way to edit the animations from inside Persona? Is there any FREE software that allows me to edit animations? I tried already Clara.io and Daz Studio, but apparently they just can’t load the initial file well and everything gets messed up.

Sounds like the Export axis is wrong. On Export from Blender it is important to get the correct axis for your exported file. The default settings for Blender’s .FBX export are set to “Y Up” and “-Z Forward”.

For exporting to Unreal you need to match Unreals axis which in the settings for export are “Z Up” and “Y Forward” shown below:

I hope this solves it for you.

you can also do all of this directly inside Persona! what you need to do is just click on each individual finger and add a Key (keyframe) , upon adding that key (you need to do this one at a time for each finger) you then rotate the bone to simulate that his hand is closed and you then press APPLY. you need to add this key at the first frame of the animation and as I said you need to add a key for each finger… I have personally done this as well as I have a jump animation where the character opens his hand and I needed to close his hands (or else it would look like he is dropping whatever is in his hand before jumping)…
