Search help

  • Simple searches use one or more words. Separate the words with spaces (cat dog) to search cat,dog or both. Separate the words with plus signs (cat +dog) to search for items that may contain cat but must contain dog.
  • You can further refine your search on the search results page, where you can search by keywords, author, topic. These can be combined with each other. Examples
    • cat dog --matches anything with cat,dog or both
    • cat +dog --searches for cat +dog where dog is a mandatory term
    • cat -dog -- searches for cat excluding any result containing dog
    • [cats] —will restrict your search to results with topic named "cats"
    • [cats] [dogs] —will restrict your search to results with both topics, "cats", and "dogs"

Hey Michael,

I'm sorry to say it, but your graphics card is definitely causing the problem here. It's an old card that is below spec. Even if you could get the Launcher to open, you probably wouldn't be able to use the editor anyway. We are looking into fixing the issue so that lower end machines can open the Launcher, but it won't help you run the editor with that card.

Best,

Ben Halliday

Ok I'll have to upgrade then and hopefully that takes care of this. Thanks for all the time you took helping with this

Hi, today I faced the very same problem. I have UDK and several other 3D program installed inside an old machine and all runs smoothly, but Unreal 4 does not start at all. It fails silently. The Log is about the same reported here. Thanks for this post, I'll try update my video card as well.

AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core 4 GB NVidia 6800GT Windows 8 Pro DirectX 11

I tried that one already but still doesn't work :/ so i'm curious why it works on the mac but slow and won't even launch on the pc?

Hi Michael,

After a failed attempt, can you please attach the latest log provided in this folder:

C:\Users\USER.NAME\AppData\Local\UnrealEngineLauncher\Saved\Logs

Thanks

avatar image Stephen Ellis ♦♦ STAFF May 19 '14 at 07:19 PM

Can you also please attach your Dxdiag report?

We have had this reported by a few other users, and they all have graphic cards well under our recommended specs which seems to be causing a rendering failure in the Launcher.

avatar image jlnsvfx Sep 19 '14 at 12:57 AM

the launcher does not give you the option to load as administrator

avatar image Stephen Ellis ♦♦ STAFF Sep 19 '14 at 02:13 PM

On Windows, you can right-click the desktop shortcut for the Launcher to choose the option.

Hey Michael,

Can you attach your dxdiag and the latest log after a failed attempt, as requested above? It may help us narrow down the cause of the issue. Thanks!

avatar image Michael Walton May 21 '14 at 04:20 PM

I don't know where to find the latest log after a fail attempt but I did find the dxdiag file but when I go to attach it I get the message

"This attachment is not permitted because the file type is invalid"

avatar image Ben Halliday STAFF May 21 '14 at 04:25 PM

The log can be found here:

C:\Users\USER.NAME\AppData\Local\UnrealEngineLauncher\Saved\Logs

Just make sure you get it after a failed attempt.

When you run dxdiag, it will give you the option to "Save All Information", which creates a .txt file which you can attach.

avatar image Michael Walton May 21 '14 at 04:36 PM

ok I think this is it link text

dxdiag.txt (35.5 kB)
avatar image Ben Halliday STAFF May 21 '14 at 09:45 PM

Thanks. It does look like you're using an under-spec graphics card, but we'll look into whether that's causing the problem. Can you find and attach the Launcher Log? It can be found here:

C:\Users\USER.NAME\AppData\Local\UnrealEngineLauncher\Saved\Logs

Hey Michael,

I wanted to check in and see if this issue is still occurring after updating the Launcher. Let us know when you get the chance. Thanks!

Ben Halliday

avatar image Michael Walton Jun 11 '14 at 08:00 PM

That's the problem. It won't even load up and make it to the page that has the market for you to download sample games, update things and all that other stuff. On my Mac it makes it to that screen and works just fine but is a bit slow when I run games so not really sure why it's not loading that screen up on my PC

avatar image Ben Halliday STAFF Jun 11 '14 at 08:23 PM

Okay, two quick things to check. Can you redownload the installer from https://www.unrealengine.com/ and install that? There was an update for the Launcher, but you won't get it if you can't open the Launcher to begin with.

Then can you check and make sure the drivers for your graphics card are up to date?

Let us know what happens.

avatar image Michael Walton Jun 11 '14 at 09:16 PM

yeah I did all that and stuff is updated so maybe I need a better graphics card?

avatar image Ben Halliday STAFF Jun 11 '14 at 09:30 PM

It's almost certainly the cause, but I'm checking with the developers now to be sure. Thanks!
