Wire Frame On Top Key Bind Broken

No matter which key I set this too right now trying Alt+1 but also tried many other choices it never toggles the wire frame on top with the bright blue color, this is a really handy when sculpting terrain right now I have to go the drop down menu every time I want it on or off (trick to shut if off is to switch from terrain editing mode to normal mode which does save a few clicks)

First be super awesome to have this key bind feature working, and to catch up to a 5 year old feature in Unity being able to change the color would make the world a better place for the children.

Save a child today give us the ability to key bind and have it work and change a color, reason color is important is if you are working in different lighting setups seeing the wire frame on top if wanted is a top goal for the basic function.

Hello Vexar,

I was able to verify what you are reporting, and have gone ahead and entered a bug for this issue. For reference the number is UE-33777. We are very close to releasing our public bug tracker so you can track the issues that you would like to follow, or that pertain to your own projects. Once the issue has been addressed by our engineers, the fix will be added to the release notes for fixed issues within an upcoming full engine or hotfix release.

Let me know if you have further questions or need additional assistance.

Cheers,

Thank you AndrewHurley, I even tested it on a default project using the default key V still no luck.

I also found that if you setup the terrain material up slightly wrong it will sort the terrain material on top of the on top wireframe making it very hard to see, this happens when I am setting up new terrains and it still getting layers added to it. It can be fixed by the user so its not a high priority for me, but this should never happen no matter what you do to the material it should always work as intended.

I created a set of images from Unity 4 just to show how old this feature is I am pretty sure it was in Unity from the start, please find 3 images where I change the wireframe color from teal to red. Right now it is hard coded blue value which is hard to see on dark lighting setups.

This is claimed fixed but is still broken in 4.16. It has never worked.

Hey guys,

This bug that was entered, indeed is fixed. If you go into Landscape Mode and use the Custom Keyboard Shortcut for visualizing the Wireframe on Top, it should work as expected. You would then want to add at shortcut for re-initializing Normal mode.

I did discover and issue which I entered as a bug where using the shortcuts in anything other than Landscape mode do not work. However the viewport dropdown still do work.

UE-45603

For now you need to either use the dropdowns in the viewport, or be working in landscape mode.

Thank you,

Andrew, The keyboard shortcut has never worked ever no matter which mode you are in, I customized it and set it to default, and it does not work. The only way to get it to appear is to CLICK 3 times to turn it on going through the drop down menus, you can turn it off with 1 click by leaving terrain editing mode.

You response is confusing because you say it was fixed but they never fixed anything for all the versions I have used since I reported this. I will be happy to stream the issue live so you can see it. Let me know if you want. I can walk you through it.

Ok well some sad progress.

I updated to 4.16.1. I reverted the custom keyboard shortcut back to default.

It will work if you click in the 3d window while in terrain editing mode, but you cant toggle it on and off even in terrain editing mode.

This means the fast way to turn it off is to leave terrain editing mode then return to it but clicking toggle on normal mode. In normal mode it the key binding didn’t seem to work at all.

If you customize the keyboard short cut it does not work at all for using Alt+1 or other combos.

The current condition of this feature feels broken.

If you do not have your mouse cursor in the right window when you try to turn it on it does not work.

Using ALT+Y is not a first choice so if you change this the feature should still function and it should be able to be toggled on and off like other tools in the terrain editor.

The last thing that I want it to be able to set this color value like Unity different lighting situations makes it very hard to see the WireFrameOnTop even when it is on. See the screen shots above where I show a feature from Unity that has been around since version 1.

I am streaming right now at Twitch I am happy to show you what is broken directly.

Ok I went through and cleaned up my kb shortcuts and got A CUSTOM KB short cut to work if I click in the window while in terrain editing mode. Which is still a bug. If I am in terrain editing mode it should toggle on. Also you cant toggle it Off so two things still wrong with this feature but some positive progress that it works at all via kb shortcut.

Add+ The best way to describe how it should work is to follow the examples of the smooth and sculpt tools function. I can set a custom KB shortcut and then toggle between them while in terrain editing mode. Please let me know if I can provide more information.

In my answer I provided a link to the bug report entered for this issue. No further information is necessary at this time, but thank you for taking the time to investigate.

Thank you,

H.
