4.13 "Map file was saved with a newer version" error

On starting up 4.13 I get this error: “Failed to open map file. This is most likely because the map was saved with a newer version of the engine.” This happens on my converted map, not on the examples. Any way to fix this?

Hi Dogsofknowledge,

Give this a try. You should be able to retrieve a backup.

Let me know if that or nothing else from that thread works.

Cheers,

TJ

Thanks, I tried the backup but the level still wouldn’t load. I created a new level and this one loaded fine.

Never mind, I just lost the new level too. It happens when UE4 crashes while saving.

Yeah, crashing during a save can definitely corrupt it. Do you want to investigate the crash? If so:

Do you know what is causing the crash? Is this also happening in a new project?

Please include your crash report and MachineID/EpicID. Also the crash logs if possible.

It’s not a problem with UE4, it’s with my CPU. Is there any way to fix files that have been corrupted by a crash?

Unfortunately, no. Once a file has become corrupted it is generally gone.

This doesn’t help with the files that have already became corrupted but most people try to use some sort of source control (Perforce, SQL, etc) to make sure they can roll back their files/project if needed. I would suggest to start using that, especially if your PC isn’t reliable when running UE4.

I FOUND A SOLUTION ON THIS PROBLEM!!!

  1. Right click the project
  2. Select show in folder
  3. Locate Saved folder and go to the back-up
  4. Copy the latest back-up file then paste in project map folder
  5. Delete the original level map
  6. Rename the copied back-up file the same as the original
  7. Now open your project
  8. And done ur project is fix.
