Landscape: Splat vs Paint.... can we bring 'em together?

I was wondering if their is a workflow that would allow you to define Landscape Layers based off a splat map as a starting point, but then iterate and refine via UE4’s Landscape layer paint tool.

It seems like you have to choose one or the other right now. But the potential workflow described above allows content creators to leverage awesome procedural tools (such as World Machine) as well as UE4’s sweet tools like the layer paint and splines.

Example Case: I have a huge Landscape. I made it with World Machine, and I am driving the Landscape material blending with a splatmap output from WM. Now I want to carve it up with roads and paint/blend some specific areas per my game’s needs.
I dont want to have to try and get the fidelity and natural look that WM splats give me by hand painting just so i can use UE4’s Landscape material tools.

Yep. I don’t know how I managed to glance passed that. Works like a charm.
I should probably make a video, since all the reference out there never touches on this.

I was just playing around with this myself.

I think you can achieve what you want in a round about way.

Rather than using a single traditional Splat map you need to first extract each of the channels of your splat map into separate 8bit greyscale png files.

Then follow this tutorial to import the 8bit splats into each of your landscape layers: Weightmaps

From there you should be able to paint over the splats (weightmaps) the normal way.

Hope that helps.

A video would be fantastic. Please do!

Awesome, I was just looking for this. I’m using a World Machine terrain as well.

I just have a question. If I use 2 WM that have white pixels in the same place (like flow map and deposition map), what will the result be? Is there a way to choose wich one will be on top, or do they blend together?

When multiple layers have solid white in the same place, then the layer you import last will override the previous layers. So in that sense you can choose which layer is on top by controlling the order in which you import them. Hope that help.

Nice, thanks for the info.

thanks this helped me out as well.

Hi, did you ever get around to making a video? as I’m having a lot of trouble getting my head around this and your question is the closet I’ve been able to find on what I’m trying to achieve

Thanks
