What Assets Sell Best on the UE4 Marketplace?

Hi there!

Among other projects I’m planing on creating a bunch of assets for the UE4 market place. I was wondering what kind of assets are being sold the most. This information is important to me because I want to focus on what developers and designers actually want and need.

There are a lot of different directions I can go and I was hoping to find some insight here. Already I have started and created two medieval weapons, a sword and an axe. I have made some screen shots as well to better demonstrate what level of detail the assets have as of now (to ensure best quality I used pic-upload):

The weapons are composed of Iron, Steel, Leather and Emerald.

So then, what are people most interested in? At the moment I will include the following features:

  • Detailed Meshes with 3 LODs
  • Material Instances (with texture, normal map, color and tiling parameters)

Thanks a lot for any kind of information!

as the forums are currently down I wont link you, but there are actual specific “what do you like to see on the marketplace” & “marketplace suggestion” threads going on, on the ue4 forums.

I also suggest to read the marketplace submission guidelines:

As for the sword/mace:
This content does not contain PBR materials.
The metal map is off, as is the roughness map. (dont seem to exist even)
the normal map is very varied in texel density, making it look odd.
Some parts of texture are oversized, overstretched, weirdly scaled, or no attention put in at all.

Your content should rival Over 9000 Swords in Weapons - UE Marketplace in quality of mesh, textures, material setup if you want to submit it to the marketplace.

here are some beginner tutorials on how to make weapons and creatures: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMCItPDDtoIh3W71Vbf-AXw
Keep in mind that these tutorials are four years old, and might not contain proper PBR workflow.

and definitely look into baking down from high polygon meshes to low polygon meshes.

I know this sounds harsh, but looking at those weapons you are quite far away from making content that will be accepted on the marketplace.

Keep practicing, keep learning, and keep improving yourself while having fun!

Yes, Initially I wanted to go to the forums but as you said they were down, but I didn’t know there was such a category so thanks a lot for the info. About your answer: No it doesn’t sound harsh at all I’m fully aware that my assets are no where near marketplace quality, it was just for people like you to see what I have made so far and tell me what needs improvement. And that’s exactly why I asked this question. So thanks a lot again for your help!

By the way what does it actually mean to have PBR Materials? How could you tell that my content did not contain PBR Materials? Does it just mean that the maps for Base Color, Roughness, Metallic and Specular must be derived from the same texture or what exactly??
