Slow FPS, Very Slow

Hello there and thanks for viewing my question.

I’ve been wanting to learn and create my own game for the longest time now but came across an obstacle that I’m not too sure of which the solution should be. While learning UE4 from their massive tutorial playlist, I have found that my player runs slow. Like very slow. I was comparing my FPS to the some people making time lapses and it’s signficantly different. I am averaging 8 FPS while others are hoping for 80. While on the ‘lit’ mode of the editor, it lags every time I try to move it. What i have been doing is editing on the ‘unlit’ and been getting framerates of around 30. I’ve included a picture to help show the struggle:

I know that the solution wouldn’t lie in the engine as much it does in the laptop I am currently using. Here is some information about my computer that could probably help the situation.

Processor: Intel(R) Core™ i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz 2.50 GHz

Installed Memory (RAM): 6.00 GB (4.66 GB usable)

64-bit Operating System

Service Pack 1 (Windows 7)

Here is my DixDiag: DixDiag - Pastebin.com

I am completely stumbled and don’t know what to do. Would updating my laptop to Windows 10 do anything? Do I need another Graphics Card? If I do, which one? I hope an expert can help me on this subject and begin a smooth journey through UE4.

Thank you so much for the help,

Come on, you can’t be serious. Intel HD 4000 GPU is not the GPU you want to play on, especially not to develop on.

You need while new PC / laptop if you want to develop with UE4 productively.

Well first off:

  • The refresh rate for your monitor is 60hz, so you should be striving for 60FPS.
  • That said, you are running on an Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 Integrated GPU.
  • You are running on a Mobile CPU, which sometimes won’t really affect the outcome as much but…
  • You should not be expecting 60FPS, let alone 80FPS with your current setup.
  • You just do not have the power.

I’m not sure what laptop you have, but if you can get an external GPU core and GPU, like this: http://www.razerzone.com/store/razer-core + something in the last 2-3 years for a GPU, you’ll be flying.

What you CAN do, to help out… is changing your Engine Scalability Settings.

  • Go to Editor Toolbar
  • Settings
  • Scalability
  • Engine Scalability
  • Select Low, maybe Med. But I’d go with Low.

Can’t use Razer Core unless there is Thunderbolt 3 on the laptop.

He may very well have a thunderbolt/usb-c plug /shrug

Thank you all for the fast respond. I understand that my computer isn’t powerful enough to run UE4 effectively. However I don’t have so much money to spend on a new computer just for UE4. My final question on this topic is what should I do?

I have the option of getting a new computer/laptop or getting a better/upgraded graphics card.

If you have any suggestions on what I should do in my situation, please comment them. I would very much appricate a link to a cheap and reliable computer or graphics card, whatever you think is best for my situation.

Last thing, how do you find a computer of good power, like what is the minimum reqirements of a powerful computer?

Thank you so much again,
