Search help

  • Simple searches use one or more words. Separate the words with spaces (cat dog) to search cat,dog or both. Separate the words with plus signs (cat +dog) to search for items that may contain cat but must contain dog.
  • You can further refine your search on the search results page, where you can search by keywords, author, topic. These can be combined with each other. Examples
    • cat dog --matches anything with cat,dog or both
    • cat +dog --searches for cat +dog where dog is a mandatory term
    • cat -dog -- searches for cat excluding any result containing dog
    • [cats] —will restrict your search to results with topic named "cats"
    • [cats] [dogs] —will restrict your search to results with both topics, "cats", and "dogs"

Static Mesh re-import LOD bug

I have two tree meshes, "tree" and "tree_low". When I re-import the "tree.fbx" asset it is replaced by the contents of "tree_low.fbx". Currently I'm having to re-import everything for the LOD group from scratch in order to update the base LOD.

Hi Antidamage -

LODs should always be imported in as a group. They should be set up that way and imported from a single FBX and not two FBXs. **Here is a link to our LOD documentation which explains how to set up the groups in Maya.** And **here is a link to the Level of Detail Utility in 3ds Max documentation**.

That way when you are fixing a model in any one Level you will still be updating the singular FBX asset.

Hope that clarifies for you,

Eric Ketchum

Maya isn't an option for most developers starting out, please don't remove support from the UE IDE to import individual LOD meshes.

This answer doesn't resolve the bug which is easily reproduced.

Hi Antidamage -

Have no fear, we have no intention of removing the single LOD importation setup. It may not be the best way to deal with LODs but we understand some have no other option.

I have reproduced your problem but currently this is a feature that is working as intended. As when you click the reimport option and not the LOD >> reimport LOD1, the engine is doing exactly what it is supposed to be doing. It is reading the FBX file and returning exactly what that file has told it to, so no LODs.

I can understand your frustration at this problem however and have entered a request to add a feature to reimport the Base mesh as an LOD and not as a whole FBX reimport.

Thank You

Eric Ketchum

That would resolve it and keep it robust. Thanks Eric!

A work around to this is to simply move the two FBX files from their source location on your HD to a new folder. Then when you tell the editor to re-import the file it won't be able to find them at their source location and you can then specify a new source fbx.
