Loaded Project Crashes Randomly (help)

Hey there,

Branch: Binary

Build Version: 4.1.1-2066463

Repro Steps: It seems the editor only crashes when I load a saved map. Maps I create anew are fine and don’t crash until I save, exit and re-open. It’s incredibly frustrating, don’t know what to do.

Problem: I’ve been having problems with the unreal engine 4 a lot recently. It seems to crash every 2 - 5 minutes for no reason. Sometimes it happens during import, sometimes during foliage selection/placement, sometimes when saving assets or applying materials, or simply navigating the viewport. On some occasions it closes for absolutely NO reason. I leave the editor open and it just switches off in a few minutes. It’s extremely frustrating. I was wondering if maybe I’m missing something? Some kind of plugin or setup I need to have? Any help would be much appreciated.

System Specs:

  • 8gb Ram
  • Nvidia Geforce 550 ti
  • i3 core 3.3 ghz
  • Windows 7 64 - bit

Thanks in advance for any answers and apologies in advance if this is the wrong place to post this question, I’m new here

P.S.: If log files are needed, please tell me how and where to upload them, since when I try to attach the log files, it says: “file type is invalid”, or something along those lines…

I am having the same issue. UE4 will open and show project but as soon as I begin to work it will randomly shut the window and I will lose anything I have created. I have tried deleting project and starting over but problem persists in new project. This has only been happening recently; within last couple weeks. I am working with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, 16 GB RAM, Nvidia 770, and a Quad Core Processor 3.50 GHz to 4.10 Turbo. Please fix soon as I can’t work on projects with current condition.

Hey dgonik,

After looking into the specs that you have provided for your PC, your specs seem to be below what the recommended are to run UE4. I compared your GPU and CPU to the ones recommended and they show a lower rating overall. I am not fully saying that it would be a hardware issue, but that is the on place that pops out to me. The 4.1 update is very reliant on the GPU because of the rendering update. The 4.1.1 lowers the stress placed on the GPU but not so significantly to where the GPU is calm and not stressed. It could also be caused by the assets you place in the level. With the CPU and GPU you have being lower then the recommended, putting to much stress may cause the editor to give out and close.

I just have a couple questions for you:

  • Was the Editor crashing when you had a saved project, updated to 4.1.1 and then tried to open the project or was it crashing after you created the project in 4.1.1, saved it, and then tried to open it later ?
  • Was there a crash log window that popped up when the Editor crashed? and if so, do u have a screenshot of it?
  • How slowly was the editor running, as you were working in it, before each crash has occurred?

Thanks for your patience!

I am found this problem since recent update to 4.1.1. I have created a project with the new update and saved it. It continues to shut the window randomly when creating items within project. There is no crash log. The window simply closes and tries to recover data when you reopen but stats that it is unable to do so. There was no slow down before the crash all assets were working correctly with no graphical errors.

I think I may have found the issue. I am using a landscape piece in which the material I applied to the landscape was removed would no longer cause the window to close. I had made a material from a tutorial video - YouTube and that material seem to be the issue. I loaded a material issued with the engine and it works fine now. Thank you for your time.

Thank you for the reply! I created my project in 4.1.1 and saved it in 4.1.1. The exact steps were, before I exited, I first selected “save all” and then “save as”. I don’t think it could be the assets, because the assets in so far are just a few textures (1 texture of 4096x4096 and about 8 textures of 512x512). The editor was not working slowly at all when I was using it. The crash only happens after opening an already saved file. If I start a new project, the editor works fine until I save, exit and reopen. The editor was not working slowly at all as far as I can tell. Sometimes compiling shaders takes a fair amount of time, but asides from that it’s all good…

So basically I started the project form scratch… same problem. I traced my steps, saved and reopened often, and it seems that the problem could be with the landscape material… after creating and adding it the crashes start… It’s a pretty complex material, could that be the issue? Here are the logs just in case and a screenshot of the crash log. link text

Do you still get this in 4.2?

I don’t. I tried the material I used when it was crashing and it worked with no problems. Thank you for the patch being released so quickly.
