Playing sound cues requires real time audio enabled?

In order for me to be able to play my sound cues and audio files, it seems I have to enable real time audio and turn the real time audio level up i.e. I have to listen to the audio in my level to be able to hear the audio when I play a sound cue which is rather cumbersome considering I’d like to only listen to a sound cue not the various background sounds in my level as well.

I feel like this is a bug or design problem (hence the section I’m posting to)?

I should be able to disable sounds from my editor but still be able to play sound cues. I don’t know if I am missing something hence a bug report because I feel this shouldn’t happen.

Hey catonice,

I was unable to reproduce this in a new blank project using the Starter Content audio cues. Could you test this as well?

The real-time audio should not pertain to the sounds being played from the Content Browser.

You might also want to test in a more recent version of the engine to see if it occurs there as well. This could just be a project specific issue.

Thank you,

Yes so I checked with version 4.12, no problems, it may have to do with editor preference settings such as enabling the background audio and so forth. I will do some more testing at a later point when I have the project available again and give some more depth into my problem. Thanks for the quick reply!

I just want to point out that I had the same problem.
I am not sure if it really was the fix, but I changed the real-time audio slider and unmuted it, it didn’t work.
Then restarted the editor, the I could play audio cues again.
Then disabled it again, audio cues worked so I restarted again.
Audio cues still worked.

I have a different audio problem which I’ll create a post about, but I don’t think the issue is isolated. Bare in mind, this is a project that has gone through engine version to engine version since 4.4 or 4.6 I believe.
I created a 4.13 project to test the issue, and could not replicate it…so perhaps it’s some weird problem going from an older version to 4.13, like most of the problems occur as a result of doing.

Thanks for that bit of information Otreum.

If you manage to isolate the issue like you mention and get a repro down for the bug, let me know by providing a link to the post in your response. We can continue the troubleshooting there.

Thanks,
