Royalties for iOS / MAS distributed, free games?

Hi,

I know there are similar questions on answerhub already but I have a very specific scenario in mind.
I’m an indie developer doing my game & graphic projects part-time.

My target platforms are iOS and OSX and my projects are generally released for free.
If I build a game using UE4 for release on Apples iOS or Mac-AppStore would I be subject to royalties?
I’m asking since I personally would not make any money from something that is on the store for free,
however I have no idea how the usage of such a title in - say a hypothetic iOS commercial or an AppStore-promo - would affect that?

Also would I still notify EPIC in advance when I’m ready to release - even if it’s non-commercial?

Thanks for your patience!

Thanks for your questions. No royalties are owed on products that are truly free (i.e., no ad revenue, no in-app purchases, etc.). If a game is used in a commercial, no royalties are owed because the license excludes linear media from owing royalties. When you say an App Store promo, I’m not sure what that would entail.

Even if your product is free, we still ask that you notify Epic of its release here.

Thanks for that clarification!
Am I correct in my understanding that I’ll also be allowed to use and distribute assets freely available from the Marketplace?

You can certainly use free Marketplace assets in your game. When you say distribute, you can if they are inseparably embedded in your game, but not separately distribute the assets.

Yes that’s what I was referring to - assets cooked into the game an not extractable.

Thanks for your quick answers and the great licensing model you provide for UE4!
