Map cant be open anymore

one of my levels cannot be opened by the editor anymore. In level streaming right click load wont work… and loading the level alone will give me an error saying “Failed to load the map file. This is most likely because the map was saved with a new version of the engine.” Wtf is happening here…? Luckily i have a back up on another hard drive… but this is some risky stufff if unreal suddenly cant open a map ever again.

Can you tell us more about the project in which this occurred? For instance:

  1. Did this occur in a project that you updated to the most recent Engine version? If so did you create a copy of the project or simply update the original without making a copy?
  2. If you can access the original map with the original version of the Engine, does the level that you cannot open in 4.13 have any errors when you run a map check?

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS:

  1. Open original project in the version of the Engine it was created in and run a map check on all levels. Correct any and all issues.
  2. Open a copy of the original project in the UE4.13
  3. In the Content Browser, right-click on the Contents folder and select "fix up redirectors in folder. Save Project.
  4. Run a map check on all levels and fix any issues.
  5. Save and exit project.
  6. Delete Intermediate, Saved and Config folders from the Project Folder.
  7. Reopen project and re-enter Project and Editor Settings.
  8. Test to see if level opens.

Unfortunately i cannot try your troubleshooting tips. I already overwrote the level with a previous backup version of it. (I made very little changes to the level… it was literally just looking around and moving some lights and hitting save…) Who knows what went wrong.

The info i can give you… i have been working with it in unreal engine 4.13 for a while now… i updated it from 4.12 around the time period of when 4.13 was released. I have had plenty of issues updating from 4.12 to 4.13 which i have reported, but no real answers as to why those issues occured… here are those links. In either case i have been working in 4.13 this entire time so i thought i moved past that by redoing certain rooms and lights.

as for mapcheck goes… 0 errors… 12 warnings “More overwridden materials (2) on static mesh component that are referenced in sourch mesh ‘mesh name’”
Im not sure what that warning means.

Because the differences from one version of the Engine to the next can be extreme in some cases, we recommend the following work habits:

  1. Do not update your project to a newer version. Finish your project in the version it was started in if possible.
  2. If you must update your project to a new version for a bug fix or to make use of a new feature, be sure you choose the option to create a copy of the original in the new version (Leaving the original in tact.) This will allow you to complete the troubleshooting steps I’ve listed above.

Unfortunately, I was not able to reproduce this issue in order to enter a bug report. Let me know if you need any additional assistance with this issue.
