Having trouble implementing skeleton

Hi all. I am currently trying to build a moon like area for a personal project. Of course what would the moon be without an astronaut? I have downloaded said astronaut FBX file, yet when I try to import it into the editor using the Starting Mannequins skeleton I receive a warning that it has failed and must remake the bones. When I do this the original skeleton loses all animations. Naturally I tried to import the character creating its own skeleton, and it has one singular bone straight down the body. Does anyone know how I could enable the animations from the mannequin to the astronaut?
