My laptop crashed and how to extract back the data?

Hi guys I am in a really bad situation . My computer crashed yesterday showing the error message something like “disk read error restart by pressing ALT CTRL DEL” . I have a few question to put forward… and it is open to suggestions

  1. My epic launcher is in C drive and I am able to access every drive via kali linux installed in my pendrive.
.and my engines are installed in another drive. So, should I create a backup of the engine file and will copy/paste help me or will I have to re install the engine?

  2. My vault data is in the default location and will copying help me or will I have to download it again.

Please leave any suggestions guys . I am in serious need for help . And is this a hardware issue as google suggest . If so how am I able to access my hard disk drives via kali linux ?

Please don’t think that I abandoned the question if I don’t post or reply as I am using my room mate’s laptop to post the question and it looks indecent to always ask for his help and the net is kind of slow…

Vault files: you can copy paste your vault files safely and they will work, you can also go the launcher settings and specify a new directory for your vault files.

The launcher: you cannot copy past the launcher, you need to reinstall it, don’t worry it’s not that big of a file

Your project files: these are the most important files that you should definitely copy

The engine: you can copy it but sometime it works, sometime you have to make a few extra steps, and usually you will run into a few issues along the way, not to mention that you need to start the engine directly from UE4editor.exe, and you cannot launch it from the launcher. I would recommend to re download it if possible.

Since you are able to access your files using linux, your harddrive should be intact, however your pc is not recognizing the harddrive meaning that an essential file for startup is corrupted. If you don’t have one create a windows repair disc, here’s a small tutorial (windows 8 and 10 have a similar feature):

Please backup your files before attempting any repair

Gd luck

I am sorry if I was wrong in conveying the message .it is not any launcher issue due to which my laptop crashed but some os related problem …
I just wanted to know whether copying files helps or not

Ah that’s my mistake, I apologize for misunderstanding the issue.

Honestly, to avoid any issues I’d recommend clean reinstalls of all of the content that you need. This will ensure that there is no corruption in the files from the crash you experienced.

Let me know if you run into any further issues.

Sir my question is that do I have to reinstall all my files of vault and engine content as i am unable to recover windows 8.1 . God know what kind of updates microsoft do… . I am able to access all my disk partitions so copying the launcher file will help or do I have to download again ?
Same question for vault data.

hey man it was a hardware related issue. hard disk cable has gone loose /damaged
