What other software would be required to make a basic game?

Let me start off by saying that funnily enough the release of cry engine on steam lead me to Unreal Engine 4, which I prefer the look of, especially with the Blueprint system which could remove the requirement of me having to learn to code.

I am more interested in using the Unreal Engine as a recreational thing for myself; it looks like a lot fun to just have a mess around in and I feel like it would be interesting to have a little project where I create a simple game and then if I feel like it is worthy of a release I might do that. My question is whether anything else is required to create a full game as I have seen that you might need Maya or 3DSmax to create character models. I wasn’t phased by this at first but I am still at school and the price for these two pieces of software is ridiculous to me. I have then started to wonder what else might be needed and I hope that you can help me figure out a way around this.

This is very helpful and the free options look like a good place to get me started. Unfortunately I am not in University (a lot younger than that) but I do really appreciate the fast response.

I’ll try to add a basic list of suggestions for different softwares you can or will need to use for different areas or production. I will not include audio.

  • Modelling: 3dsmax, Maya, Modo, Blender, Softimage XSI, Cinema 4D, 3D Coat
  • Sculpting (high res modelling): Zbrush, Sculptris, Blender, Mudbox, 3D Coat
  • Texturing/Material (2D or projection painting): Photoshop, GIMP, Substance Designer/Painter, Zbrush, Mudbox, Blender, Modo, 3D Coat
  • Animation/Rigging: 3dsmax, Maya, Blender, Softimage XSI, Cinema 4D

The free choices would be Blender, Sculptris and GIMP. The rest you have to pay for. If you get Blender and GIMP you should have the minimum to access the whole pipeline (except audio and PhysX/Apex).

If you are a student at a university, you most likely have access to all of Autodesk products as a student license. Try registering for an account on their website with a student email account. Note that these licenses are not for commercial purposes.

Going the free route, Blender and GIMP should be your starting point as a replacement for 3DStudio Max and Photoshop.

You should look at Inkscape, Inkscape, as a replacement for Illustrator for vector graphics.

If you want to make your own sound fx and jams, check out:

Sonar, Cubase, Reaper, Pro Tools, FL Studio.

They come with various sounds, but for good sound plugins check out Native Instruments. Plenty of good free plugins too.
