Decals are always seethrough

Hi,

I tried to make a normal decal, one that has masked parts, the others are 100% opaque (so for example a poster on the wall). The problem is that I can’t achieve this, as it is always translucent. I looked at the decal examples but all of them has the same issue. There are a few questions here, but I couldn’t find any proper answers. Is it only on my PC or an existing issue already worked on?

Right side: normal decal, left side: 10 normal decals. On the second picture I added skylight to the scene and it made it even worse.

Cheers,
Fisher

Hi Fisher007,

Our decal system will have some bleed through. For what you are doing, it would be less expensive to create a one poly plane and apply your material to it, than all the calculations that would be needed to make that decal completely solid.

Thanks, TJ

That is very strange. Why is it made like that? Vast majority of the usage I can think of would require 100% opacity with masked parts, like environmental destruction, posters on the wall, newspapers or garbage on the ground, bullet holes, small object details… basically anything other than fluids or dirt. So IMO this decal system is useless other than a few instances. Having floating polys is okay for placeholder purpose, but for having it in the final product, well, I can take that as a joke. It’s like saying you don’t need a dominant light, just put more point lights around.

Anyways, thanks for the answer.

I understand where you’re coming from, this has been brought up internally as well. The developers are looking into improving the decal system.

Please take a look at our Trello Roadmap, you can vote for Epic to prioritize features and improving the Decal System is under the Rendering section.

Thanks, TJ

Ahh nice, I just voted. Thanks for the headsup.
