What's wrong with my model/rig?

Hello all,

I’m part of a team using the new UE4 engine. I’m mostly a texture artist and fresh animator, so figuring out the capabilities of UE4 is a big step for me, much less trying to figure out what’s going bad when I’m importing an animation into it.

So, when I look at the animation I want to import in maya, it looks like this:

When I import the .fbx animation into UE4, the model then looks like this:

The mouth melts. Sometimes there’s a strangeness in the hair or the ears bow out as well, but the melted mouth is consistent throughout all the animations I’m importing.

As for errors that I’m getting, UE4 throws up this error when I import the .fbx animation.

I don’t know if that has any bearing on what’s going on.

When I export the .fbx animation from maya, I get two errors. This is what maya has to say about it.

and

I found where that transform1 is in my outliner:

but I’m afraid to touch it… And it doesn’t look like it’s part of the melty mouth issue. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Thanks.

Hi yesNinja -

From what you are describing it sounds like a vertex weight issue, but you seem to say that this model animates correctly in Maya just not in Unreal. Can you confirm that your vertex weights are correct? Also make sure that when you export from Maya into UE4 that you export using FBX version 2013 which will probably stop that first error that you are getting.

Thank You
