OSX editor focus

Using UE 4.13.2 on an iMac running OSX 10.11.6

When I launch the Unreal Project Browser, and I click in the project name field, focus immediately switches to the starter content button, as if I had pressed cursor up. Clicking on a template on the second row of templates does the same thing, the focus immediately jumps to the template above, as if cursor up had been pressed.

I have disconnected my keyboard in case it was sending bogus keypresses, but it still happens. Likewise if I disconnect the mouse. So it doesn’t seem to be hardware related.

I have also tried installing 4.9.2 and the issue is still there. I don’t doubt for a minute that there is probably something funky with my machine, so any help regarding what might be interfering would be welcome.

Hey MerseyViking,

Please provide the following:

Your Mac’s specs. You can find this in the Apple menu >About This Mac>More Info> Add the information from this window (serial # not necessary).

The “System Report:” Apple menu >About This Mac > System Report>Hardware (All information listed in the “Hardware Overview.”) You can cut and paste this information or provide screen shots, whichever is more convenient.

Thanks,

.

Hi ,
I don’t have a “More Info” option, but here’s what I managed to screencap. If there’s anything else you need, let me know.

I was not able to reproduce this on our closest system, a MacBook Air running.

Was UE4.13.2 the first version of the engine you installed and tried? -In other words have you ever had a correctly functioning version of UE4 on your iMac?

Have you tried verifying both the UE4.13 and UE4.9 versions of the Engine? (Library>Engine Version>Yellow Down Arrow>Verify)

Does installing and verifying the UE4.14 Preview resolve this issue?

Are you able to upgrade to the OS and try? If so, make sure you make a back up with Time Machine or similar.

When testing, besides your keyboard and mouse, do you have any other hardware installed?

Please respond with this information and we will continue to investigate. -Thanks!

Thanks for looking into this. Yes, UE4 13.2 was the first one I have tried on this machine.

Both versions (13.2 and 9.4) verify successfully.

There is no other hardware installed. I have also tried a USB keyboard, but there is no difference.

I have installed and it still does the same thing with 13.2. I can’t run 4.14.0 preview 2 because my graphics card is old and crusty, and doesn’t support Metal.

I’ve checked against the Apple Open GL chart and your graphics card should support Up to UE4.13, although the card could be faulty or their could be some kind of software conflict.

One thing you can try is under Editor Preferences>Plugins>Graphics Switching: Change rendering ID (if this is an option on your system.)

Similarly, you can try reducing your rendering settings and restart the editor to see if this resolves the issue. Settings>Engine Scalability Settings> change to “Low” or “Medium.”

Also, in the Viewport> Down arrow> uncheck “Realtime” and all view modes.

I’ve upgraded to , with no joy, and 4.14 still doesn’t like the GPU.

Running 4.13.2, I only have one rendering ID, so that doesn’t seem to be the issue. I think this is a UI framework problem, rather than a rendering one because it happens in the project browser. I can click on “Create Project” (I can’t change the name because focus won’t stay in the project name text box), and the editor comes up as expected after the initial build, but clicking on any editor UI element causes the focus to shoot up the screen as if the cat had fallen asleep on the cursor up key.

Running the game in the editor is ok - the basic code example can be controlled with WASD, the mouse, and the cursor keys without any problems.

I’ve created a video to show what happens in the editor, and the same sort of thing happens in the project browser.

The behavior demonstrated in your video would be what happens if you held down the tab and shift keys simultaneously. With the editor open, try holding the tab key down for several seconds, then try different tab + combinations like tab + shift, tab + alt etc. to see if this resolves the issue. If this does not work, navigate to your project folder and delete the Saved, Intermediate and Config folders.

Since this is not a widely reported bug, you may want to also try completely powerering down your machine, unplugging for 5 minutes and restarting. Let me know if any of these steps resolve your issue.
