What do I need to do?

Hello everyone!

I read the “faq” section, and I have some doubts… I am creating a game for mobile devices. After I finish it, I will publish it for each mobile (IOS, Android, Windows Phone, etc…) The game will have in game purchase features… Do I need to pay Unreal Engine 5% royalty each time I earn money with my game? Do I need to get an Unreal Engine’s license or something? Can I copyright my game, if I made it with Unreal Engine and I used its default character animation?

You’ve got a few questions in there. Let me take them each:

  • You pay a royalty to Epic of 5% of gross revenue that you earn for the game after the first $3000 in gross revenue per calendar quarter.
  • You have an Unreal Engine license after you accept the EULA.
  • When you’re ready to release the game, please follow the instructions here to notify Epic.
  • Your creative expression in the game is copyrighted from the moment of creation, but that copyright doesn’t extend to Unreal Engine. So basically you have copyrights on the elements that you add. You can additionally register those copyrights if you choose.
