Search help

  • Simple searches use one or more words. Separate the words with spaces (cat dog) to search cat,dog or both. Separate the words with plus signs (cat +dog) to search for items that may contain cat but must contain dog.
  • You can further refine your search on the search results page, where you can search by keywords, author, topic. These can be combined with each other. Examples
    • cat dog --matches anything with cat,dog or both
    • cat +dog --searches for cat +dog where dog is a mandatory term
    • cat -dog -- searches for cat excluding any result containing dog
    • [cats] —will restrict your search to results with topic named "cats"
    • [cats] [dogs] —will restrict your search to results with both topics, "cats", and "dogs"

Engine spleeping, won't show up again

Hey, it has allready happend to me few times, i start working on something( simple map, editor mode ), i go to eat, and when i come back, engine is "frozen dead". ( 0 cpu )

When debugging, i see that engine is sleeping/ waiting but won't wake up

i'm quite new to engine, but here what i found

ThreadingBase.cpp => all instanced of FQueuedThread are waiting ( in the while( bContinueWaiting ) )

not sure if relevent but RenderingThread.cpp => FRenderingThreadTickHeartbeat is not suspended and GRenderingThreadMaxIdleTickFrequency is on 40 ( nor sure how that value is handled/is relevent, but when i pause threads, this one showed up :) )

Hello Firefly74,

I have a few questions to get more specific about this as I personally, if not intentionally, leave the editor open for days at a time on my work PC, which goes to sleep between every shift, so we know that the reproduction isn't that simple at least.

  1. When you experience this, was the editor in focus, out of focus, or minimized when the computer went to sleep?

  2. Did you put the PC into sleep manually or did it just time out and go to sleep by itself?

  3. Does this happen even with a blank project?

  4. Have you had any issues of this happening with other engine versions?

  5. Are you using a source build or one downloaded from the Epic Games Launcher?

  6. You mentioned that you have had it happen "few times". Does it happen every time you let the computer go to sleep while the editor is open or only some of the time. If it's not 100%, how frequent would you say it is on a scale of 1 to 10?

  7. Could you provide a log file from one of the times where this occurred? They can be found in the project directory under ProjectName/Saved/Logs/ProjectName.txt

I've set up one of our extra PCs to have a project open and put it to sleep manually on a Windows 10 PC to see if I can get this to occur, as it could be OS specific, since most of us here still work on Windows 7.

Edit: Also, could you screenshot your power settings in Windows? The particular settings could be related to this as well.

Hi Matthew ! I didn't had the same schedule this week so wasn't able to get the same scenario, but forgot to close my editor tonight, and here we are !

it's looks fun ( really, last line is quite odd ), but that sounds more like an os related issue

Didn't you had a chance to reproduce on your side ?

I haven't been able to get this to reproduce on my side so I'm thinking it's related to the project or some type of setting. The odd thing about that log is the time stamps. It seems that the editor froze while printing that last line, although it hadn't been inactive long enough to go to sleep if your setting is still 30 minutes. As it mentions a few lines up, you had been left clicking on something in the viewport just about 8 minutes earlier. Also, it seems that maybe the editor was in PIE when it was left out of focus? That could be related as well.

Hi Matthew ! :)

1) i would say not in focus ( nor minimized)

2) automatic sleep, just checked power settings, 30min for screen of, 1h for sleep ( if you need advanced one i will screen, but never touched them )

3) didn't try, i will give it a shot next time ( even if our project is quite empty for now )

4) quite new here, started with .13, but as i did mostly editor pluggin development to see how i could port our tools, i might have not noticed before ( no hot reload for pluggins )

5) Though Launcher

6) it did happened often last 3/4 days ( day goes like this : work -lunch-work - sport - work , so 2 time a day pc go to sleep), won't say 100% i don't recall what was the state of editor at that time

7) i will try to get one the next time ! :)

I don't recall exactly, but i might have 2 editors running with different projects, and only one of these freeze

I will give you more info next time it happen !

We haven't heard from you in a while Firefly74. I've been trying to reproduce this periodically but haven't had any luck. Have you continued having this issue? If so, do you have any of that other information? In the meantime, I'll be marking this as resolved for tracking purposes.

Hey, didn't had the bug last few weeks, i was doing more pluggin development back then, maybe that's linked, maybe a windows updated fixed that somehow. Yes, you can tag that as resolved ! :) if ever that thing come back i will comment here
