Generate Distance Field = true == crash

Editor crashes when enabled Generate Distance Fields ,

it happens after restart when editor is going to generate Distance Field for meshes

ue 4.13 works fine

Hi Ralph,

I was able to enable “Generate Mesh Distance Fields” with no error. I did my testing in the latest preview (preview 3) so if you are on this preview number could you see if you can reproduce this crash in a blank project.

I will continue this investigation once you get back to me.

so, I have tryed this with advanced car tempalte, and … → same

carshes Nvidia Kernel Driver,I am using Nvidia GTX 570 Asus Direct CU2 with 1280 MB of memmory , tryed to change drivers,
don’t know what is happenign right now

if i roll back to ue 4.13 and enable this feature, it works… like a charm,

also same bug is related to me with landscape layer if I will create more than two landscape layers and then go to — LANDSCAPE - PAINT it will do nothing until i will scroll down to see all of theese layers, it will do same crash with nvidia kervel driver…

i will wait for later update if it will happen again, maybe there are some bugs with shaders because i know u are working on it right now

not important comment:
gpus like this usually crashes on theese errors., because i know about them from ages when i was programming webgl shaders

If this issue is related to your hardware/drivers would you mind providing your DxDiag. Here are the steps:

  1. Open your command prompt and enter dxdiag
  2. When the window appears save all information
  3. Attach the generated file in this post.

This will assist us in doing some compatibility testing at our office.

Regarding the Landscape layer issue, I may need you to make another post so to make things a bit more organized. We like to have 1 post per bug even if the source issue is the same. (in this case possibly GPU or Driver)

sry, it was taking a little bit longer time, i’ve been waiting for official release if it will not dissapear, there are some more crashes related to this issue i’ve reported to answerhub.
If I open 4.13 release , everything works like a charm

  • when editing mesh properties and changing materials
  • when, I create more than two landscape layers in landscape material , then when i will go to landscape - paint, scroll down to see layers —> boom, also crash

  • reinstall windows
  • switched to simmilar gpu drivers,
  • switched my memmory sticks
  • atached gpu into another slot

Hey Ralph,

You aren’t using the recommended drivers for your gpu. For your card go to the nvidea GPU website and use the driver highlighted in the screenshot since it is what we have tested and recommend.

I’m currently discussing this issue with our QA department and have notified that there are several issues that may be related to your GPU.

Let me know if using the recommended drivers solves your issue.

i have tryed maybe 10 whql drivers and check signing win signverif in windows 10, tryed latest nvidia driver, previousdriver, original driver from my GPU bundle, also this one u have as recommended.,…

Tryed to set maximum power in nvidia panel, switch things on off,
tryed 8bit gbuffer textures,
still same

when i’ve sent u dxdiag , i was trying one of the older one

Hi Ralph,

I ran tests on a computer similar to yours and couldn’t reproduce the crash. Are you able to test with a different video card that would help determine if this issue is specific to your gtx 570 card.

What is operating system U are testing it on ? Will UE 4.14 be able fully run on windows 7 ?

maybe i have found what is wrong , because I have old windows 10 build with disabled anoying updates throught registry my dxdiag says I have directx 11.2 version, and found that dx11.3 is avaliable from version 10586.
I am going to do some research and will give u feedback with later win 10 build if it will solve maybe all those issues with NVIDIA if UE 4.14 is based on dx11.3 and later

finallyt THATS IT !!! Oh I’ve solved this… its because earlier build version of Windows 10 than 10586 will not recognize d3d11.3 and more.
So all who read this… forget forever crashing KERNEL of GPU after U will get later build , best u can do , get latest AIO version.

to MR.AndrewHurley that he pointed me to use -d3ddebug flag which gave me info about crashing d3d11.3 layers. it was due to my operating system was not able to use more than d3d11.2 version…
