Engine crash when using animation blueprints

Since version 4.14 I’ve started having an issue, primarily when working with anim BPs. Generally opening an animation blueprint causes the engine to freeze indefinitely, and if I do get it to open then it usually freezes if I try and delete a node.

The bottom 4 lines in the log file are always:

[2016.11.20-03.53.53:595][889]LogD3D11RHI: Timed out while waiting for GPU to catch up. (0.5 s)

I’ve tried various projects, including an almost empty project.

Specs:
i7-4702MQ CPU 2.20GHz
8GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce GT 720M
Windows 10

Any help greatly appreciated.

Here is the log file from one of the projects that crashes (charmovementtest.log), it’s a project bought forward from an older version of the engine. I have also produced the same result in a new blank project, the log for that is also included (myproject.log).

Hey mattwood2185,

I’d like to get your full dxdiag info. It’ll let me see exact specs and also the latptop model. Many issues that we see from laptops with discrete and integrated graphics is that it isn’t switching to the discrete graphics (the GT 720M) and instead running the editor with the integrated CPU graphics.

Open up your Nvidia Control Panel, go to 3D Settings>Manage 3D Settings, then go to the Program Settings tab. Find the UE4Editor.exe file for the editor version you’re using and set it to use the “High-performance NVIDIA processor” and hit Apply.

You’ll also want to ensure that you are using the correct driver versions for both the integrated and discrete cards. Do you have a Win10 compatible Nvidia driver from your laptop manufacturer or from Nvidia? Intel’s update software lies and says you’re up to date when you aren’t as well. You’ll need to track down the right driver and install manually
