Blueprint Crash (UE 4.14)

I’m getting a pretty frequent startup crash when – I’m guessing – blueprints are being parsed. I haven’t had this kind of issue when upgrading the engine version before, so I’m not entirely sure where to look for the issue. I’m also guessing that my liberal use of child actors is somehow affecting this. Anyway! Call stack:

Hey -

Are you using any plugins in your project and, if so, which ones? Additionally, if you are using plugins, please try right clicking on the .uproject file and open in a text editor program (ie notepad). In the “Plugins”: section, you should find an “Enabled” status for each plugin the project is using. Try changing this from true to false and then save the file and try to open the project again. If you are not using any plugins, or if you still have errors after trying the steps above, please try to remove bp_controller_projectile from the project and then open the project agian.

I am using one plugin, and it’s the VR Expansion Plugin: VR Expansion Plugin - XR Development - Epic Developer Community Forums.

Disabling the plugin seems to do the trick. The strange thing is that if I use disable the plugin, resave all the blueprint, and then re-enable the plugin and restart, then everything works fine. However, the next time I try to open the project, it will crash any time I open a blueprint the plugin uses.

Using a variety of plugins – but that didn’t ultimately affect whether or not it crashed.

I ended up having to just do a variety of little hacks to delete variables (local and class) in Blueprint by copy-pasting graphs into VSCode, manually removing the variable, then pasting the graph back into Blueprint.

I got this error and it doesn’t involve plugins. It seems it happened after I changed the name of the blueprint of the child actor I am creating. I can see in the AddChildActorComponent details, the grayed-out ‘template’ has the old blueprint name. Upgrading to 4.14.1 did not fix the problem. Creating a new blueprint and using that to create a child actor builds fine. Updating all the references to the old blueprint is going to suck so please Epic, fix this for the next guy/gal. Update: the editor crashed for another reason and I am again unable to get into my project because of this placeholder crap.

Something strange I noticed in the code: the template name being loaded is missing a ‘d’. My blueprint is called “BuildingBlock” but the template is forming the string “BuilingBlock”. Further checking: In 4.13.2, ChildActorComponent does not have a Serialize() function, but it does in 4.14.0. Whatever change that was for is the source of this issue. I hope someone at Epic can track this down. One other thing of note: I’m trying to use manual attach.

Until this bug is fixed, if you can, the only solution is to go back to 4.13.2. This is a new issue with 4.14. I’ve done so much work since I upgraded that I’m not sure what to do, but if you can, turn back now and wait til they iron 4.14 out a bit more.

I’m pretty sure Epic added replication and that’s messing us up somehow. See my comments to the OP.

had the same problem today. had to roll back a day to get the project to start again and then tried to figure out what causes the problem.

what did the trick for me was to set (in the BP that causes the problem) ‘Child Actor Class’ in the Details_tab to None and then just set the class at BeginPlay (or Construction Script) via ‘Set Child Actor Class’

Just thought I should mention that this bug was probably fixed in 4.15.
The problem is when you have an actor with a child actor, and the child actor has a reference to the parrent, (for example to execute a function on the parrent), which causes it to crash when loaded.

Personally I worked around this issue and restored the broken BP assets by copying the child actor to a fresh project, deleting the parrent reference, migrating it back and deleting all derived data cache, saved cooked data etc.
