Slate embedded browser runs very slow

The embedded browser seems to run very slow. I’d actually like to call it unusable.

I can see this in several places:

  • In the launcher, the community tab is very sluggish to scroll. The library tab is fine.
  • In the stand alone SlateViewer program, the browser appears to run at 25 fps. Scrolling a simple google results page feels very crappy.
  • The UMG browser widget also runs at 25 fps in the editor.

This is what the browser in SlateViewer shows on the testufo.com page:

My hardware:

  • i7 7820X
  • GTX 1080ti
  • 32GB ram
  • Asus PG348Q (3440x1440, 100hz, g-sync)

The editor itself runs fine as expected.
What’s the issue here? Maybe the embedded browser is outdated?

Hello Zeblote,

I have a few questions for you that will help narrow down what issue it is that you are experiencing.

Quick questions:

  1. Can you reproduce this issue in a clean project?
  2. If so, could you provide a detailed list of steps to reproduce this issue on our end?
  3. Could you provide screen shots of any blueprints/widgets/settings that may be involved with this issue?
  4. Could you provide any bench marks used to determine the speed of the browser?

To 1: Yes. I can reproduce this issue anywhere where the embedded browser is used. This includes any browser widget in any project, the slate test app in the github repo (test suite 1 tab), your launcher (unreal engine/community tab), and the frag center in unreal tournament (which, by the way, is also blurry).

To 2, 3, 4: Well I’m not sure. Open anything that contains an embedded browser and scroll a page (it feels laggy) or open testufo.com (it shows running at 24 fps). I’m not aware of any settings that could be responsible for this.

Hello Zeblote,

I was able to reproduce this issue on our end. I have written up a report and I have submitted to the developers for further consideration. I have also provided a link to the public tracker. Please feel free to use the link provided for future updates.

Make it a great day

Any news on this issue? The embedded browser is still unusable.

Part of the problem is rather simple:

But it doesn’t seem to be enough to fix it. If I set this to 100, the browser still refuses to run higher than 63 fps and now has screen tearing.

Thank you for the additional information. As for updates the public link provided above can be used to check the status of the issue.

Where is fix??? Still very slow!

Why is the web widget very slow? I am running a website which used WebGL in the browser.
