Importing from Substance: What is the regular range for Normal Intensity?

Is there a regular range of normal intensity that I should be sticking to when importing textures from Substance designer to Unreal?

I am using Substance Designer to create textures/materials for import into Unreal, but sometimes my normal maps seem to create bizarre shadows. Substance Designer asks me to set the “Intensity” on any “Normal” node I use, with a default of 1. Is there a min/max value that Unreal needs me to stay within? Can I use a normal intensity of 2? of 20? Substance Designer lets me enter any number I want, but what does Unreal expect to see?

I can’t say for sure but it sounds like you would want a value between zero and one. Intensity should only be used to dampen the actual value of the normal map. Setting it higher than one may very well cause artifacts in lighting and shadow.

If this value is set in Substance, there is no max cap since the generated normal map is already clamped in the 0 → 1 range. If you’re doing that inside the material editor, you can go above 1 as intensity multiplier but you risk going through visual artifacts, as pointed by QSBen.
