Automatic Lod SPEEDTREE Crash on Reduction

Hi all

I’ve tried everything I can but the frustration is burning just too much.

THE PROBLEM.

When applying reduction settings in 4.14.1 to my speedtree Trees, UE4 crashes as soon as I hit ‘apply’.
I’ve tried all ‘group’ types and it just crashes as soon as I hit ‘apply’.
I’ve tried reduction on all other kinds of SM in my scene, even on a 20k tri prop and reduced it to 1k tris and it works perfectly. This seems to be localised to only the meshes brought in from speedtree’s SRT files.

I have no idea how to get around it, or what is causing it.
Please feel free to download the project files to have a look, (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ia9izan83ka7zud/AACNXX73Z1CaaGPRQGwqydIza?dl=0)

Would really appreciate any help on this matter. I’ve used the AUTO Lod feature many times before so I think I’m doing everything ok, but something is just being relentless and causing this crash everytime I try and reduce these meshes.

The problem meshes are in ‘Assets/Proxy/SpeedtreeProxy’ folders.
Cheers

EDIT:
Just an update,

I have just tried doing an ‘asset Export’ from UE4 and then reimport of the same FBX and now the AUTO LOD tools work fine, so this problem is definitely confined to the SRT files being imported.

Hi PatsuKiki,

Your zip file is too large to download on my end. Try deleting your saved and intermediate file to reduce the size of the zipped project. If it is still too large you may need to remove unnecessary content.

Hey Ed! I’m running 4.15 and actually have this problem now. Any known fixes yet?

Hey PatsuKiki,

We have logged this issue and have issued a fix for 4.16. You will find the report here: Unreal Engine Issues and Bug Tracker (UE-41286)

Cheers,

Ed

Hello there,
On 4.16 the problem is still there. Would love to see a fix on this.
Thank you

Hello there, I would love to see a fix on that too.

Hello there, I would love to see a fix on that too.

Still need this fixed in 4.17, 4.19 seems a little far off…

Version 4.18.1 says hello. Hope the fix will land as scheduled in 4.19.

Just ran into the same issue. Exporting the FBX then Reimporting the very same FBX “fixed” it.

EDIT (Using 4.17.2)

This is way better…

Step one: Set the number of LOD’s you want to create for the SM and hit apply.

Step two: Right-Click the SM in the “Content” window and select “Asset Actions”. Then select “Reload”.

This tells UE4 there is a major change to the SM and will not let you make modifications to the LOD’s.

No need for a restart/reimporting the SM.

Cheers!
