How do I animate plant grow (or vines) covering a player character?

Hi, I’ve been trying to execute a concept for weeks now with no avail. Basically I want to be able to animate vines growing on the player character (as a stun move for a Boss AI) Something similar to the natures grasp from WOW. Anyone has any ideas where I can start with that?

Few ways to do this i guess. Morph targets, though i don’t personally have experiences with that, but seems like it could be done with that. Otherwise, animate the wines with a skeletal mesh/bones… and more simple, use a sort of material where you animate a parameter to control displacement or transparency. Sadly i don’t have a link to show any of these approaches, but with some googling, i hope you will be able to find a way. Hope this can get you started. GL with it.

Thanks Jonas, I found this tutorial talking about some of the approaches you mentioned. The author however admits that there maybe a better way to achieve this in UE4. Guess we will have to wait and see.
