What's best to create an animated drawn effect in Unreal?

I’m trying to create an animated line drawn effect and was wondering what the best way is to do that, similar to the mulan opening sequence.

At the moment I’m creating the effect in Maya and exporting the curves as geometry into Unreal but this is quite heavy and since I’m using a mac, I can’t make use of the alembic feature.

This is also for VR so again not sure what would work best.

If anyone is thinking about this - the way I went around it is by adding a drawn post process on my object and the used a sphere mask that scaled up over time in the material editor to give an animated effect.
