4.14 crash on material selection

Hi,

I have a strange and annoying problem with specifically the 4.14 version of UE4, this problem occurs when I try to select a material from the list in the details panel of a blueprint class, for example creating a pawn class and adding something then going to the details panel and in the material section you have a little list containing all the materials on my project that you can set for each index of your mesh but as soon as I click on it I crash, sometimes as soon as I hover my cursor on the material section without doing anything I crash.
The problem is not with material since I created a simple metallic red material with no textures, and it caused it to crash eventually.

I tried with a new completely empty project and it happened sadly, the crash doesn’t happen every time it felt to me like I have 35% chance to crash since sometimes everything seems to work just fine. I experienced the same problem in both 14.1 and 14.2, however I don’t suffer from the same problem with 13.2 it all works just fine.

The first 6-8 crashes caused the Nvidia driver to crash and recover, however now my system freezes until I get a blue screen with the message dpc_watchdog_violation in my windows 10 (64bit).

I believe the problem is due to my low end graphics card which is a GTX 560 ti but Its just weird how simply hovering my cursor on the material section caused my editor to crash the driver at first and now the entire system.
I have the latest driver installed and even tried with an old driver and I experienced the same problem.

If there’s anything I can do to track down the problem feel free to ask.

Thank you very much.

similar problem here. adding materials to FBX imported mesh completely freezes pc(win7 64b) and i have to hard reboot (maybe that’s why i can’t find any logs). GTX 560M, latest drivers, 4.14.2 + QFE.
installed 13.2, no problems so far.

Yeah that’s unfortunate, I don’t know if its a driver issue or something else, I’ve tried an old driver and got the same issue sadly.
13.2 runs flawlessly so I guess we stick with that for now.

Thanks.

Hey SenToRious,

Could you provide me with the crash logs and your ‘dxdiag’ so I can investigate the issue? If your computer is completely freezing or locking up, then that is okay. I am trying to gather as much information as possible so we can narrow down the cause of this crash.

The QFE pushed out to the public was to address some widespread crashes users were experiencing. Most of these crashes were on older cards like the one you and J._.C are using. I would make sure your drivers are up to date and also check your Windows Event Viewer when/after you experience the freeze. It can shed some more light on the issue and give you a bit more context as to why and how it is crashing.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

Thanks,

Hey thank you for replying,

Unfortunately I can’t find my saved crash report since I upgraded from 14.1 to 14.2 maybe they got lost with that, and also now my system freezes so I can’t get a crash log.
Just to clarify my system froze in 14.1 as well.

I did however submit the crash report when UE4 asked me to maybe you can find it in your database, like I said previously I would get a driver crash and recovery then UE4 shows the crash error asking to submit it and I did.

I got to admit that 14.2 reduced the chances of crashing significantly I’ve been trying to cause it to crash and see if I can get a log or see what windows viewer has but it didn’t crash at all its random I guess. If I get a crash I’ll let you know of what windows event viewer is saying.

The last time I got a proper crash, the log said something about UE4 waiting for GPU, GPU hanging and not responding.

If there’s anything I can do feel free to ask and thank you so much.
Here’s my dxDiag:

Yeah, it sounds like you were one of the users experiencing the widespread crash in 4.14.1, which was for the most part, addressed by the hotfix of 4.14.2.

This crash/hang still has some outliers that will cause the issue to occur, so if you are able to narrow down a specific instance or set of steps, that will help us identify the cause and get a fix entered.

Cheers,

I’ll make sure to do that, thank you a lot for your support, cheers.

So I will say that your machine is below our recommended min spec to run the editor, which might be a point of concern when it comes to performance within UE4.

Both documents outline the min spec, and then what we recommend when building a development PC. A lot of people like to build gaming rigs, thinking it will also run the editor well, but the editor requires a much larger amount of RAM due to working with large amounts of uncompressed files and heavy processing when doing things like running lightmass.

I would look into at least increasing your amount of available RAM from 6GB to 16GB or even 32GB if you can afford it. I recently put together a new machine for myself at home, and made sure to have a lot of RAM and a strong processor.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

Cheers,

Yeah I totally agree, I know the problem is due to my low end computer and understand that it’s not even close to the minimum specs, RAM and VRAM are very important for the editor stability and speed, I’m currently using this just to learn and few small projects on Blender, I’m definitely looking to upgrade in the following months tough its about time ^^

Thank you so much for your amazing support and keep up the good work

Hey I’ve been running the engine for a while without crash, but today I got one with a log file so I thought maybe I should let you know and see if you could see what caused it:
Event viewer reports: Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.
