How can I make a realistic looking moss material ?

Hello,

I’ve worked on this previously, I have a full list of things I’ve wanted to make but haven’t achieved and so I’m really demolishing this section of the site, but my questions could be someone else’s

I I want to create a realistic Moss material like the one seen in this picture

I want my material to look as if it had 3D small leaves hanging, unless there’s another way that isn’t too hard on performance ( maybe I should add polygons and texture them on to the mesh but still I can’t achieve something kind of realistic ) I just want my moss to have variation in colors, a really puffy/3D effect… I searched all over the internet and still haven’t seen any tutorials on something like this, if I can’t make something similar to this, all I really need is variation of colors ( lighter greens, darker greens, red-orange-yellow… brown ) but if I can achieve something close to the moss in this image, that would be perfect !

Cheers !

Resources to refer are many . Some of them are given below

create a master material that will allow you to be able to vertex paint the moss on any model: http://youtu.be/iS8wLVOJuUA

Set up a material with an up vector, so the moss will always be on the top side of whatever mesh it’s on: http://youtu.be/yGjdobDOnXs
