What is the best way to optimize the editor for development on a laptop?

I’m curious to know aside from turning off Content Browser’s Realtime Thumbnails, turning off Realtime and setting t.MaxFPS console command, are there any other ways to optimize UE4.2 to further gain some FPS (a side from the Engine Scalability Settings).

The reason I ask is that while 4.2 did give me a more solid FPS, I’m limited at 25-30FPS and 15FPS on fullscreen, is there anything else I can optimize without affecting overall graphics quality - as I do Environment Art.

I wonder if Slate is affecting overall FPS, if there a way to get so much as another 5-10 FPS out I would be more than happy.

nVidia Geforce 660m 2GB GDDR5
12GB Ram
Intel i7-3610QM @ 2.3GHz
(I know the specs are lacking, but I’m trying to get another year out of this machine)

Cheers in advance guys!

Hi Sythen,

Unreal Engine 4 was designed to be a powerful piece of software that requires high-end hardware to run it as well. This is why we list our minimum specs as they are below. I’ve included some links to the forums where users, like yourself, are discussing using UE4 on different hardware than recommend.

In regards to the Content Browser, in the bottom right corner you can select the eye that says ‘view options’ and un-check ‘real-time thumbnails.’

The only other option (listed below and that you mentioned) is to adjust the engine scalability settings to fit the fps you want but you will lose your graphical fidelity.

Our minimum system requirements are posted in the Frequently Asked Questions section of our main page, UnrealEngine.com.

What are Unreal Engine 4’s system
requirements? You will need a powerful
setup to get started developing with
UE4 right now. Here’s what we
recommend: Desktop PC or Mac Windows
7 64-bit or Mac OS X 10.9.2 or later
Quad-core Intel or AMD processor, 2.5
GHz or faster NVIDIA GeForce 470 GTX
or AMD Radeon 6870 HD series card or
higher 8 GB RAM

These specifications reflect what we feel are the minimum requirements to have a good user experience using the engine.

The engine can run on slower machines in most instances but it is not guaranteed to run or to even provide a good user experience.

The community has put together a forum thread with their machine setups and what their experience is with the engine. The post is titled: [Compatibility List] Unreal 4 - Hardware Feedback]

Take a look there and see if anything matches what you are have or is close. This will give you a better idea than I could about what will best work for you.

I do want to mention as well that the engine is capable of scaling the detail down to give you a better user experience but it will lack features when this is done though. I’m linking the Engine Scalability Settings here to see if this may assist you in what you’re looking for.

Thank you!

Tim

Thank you very much for the in-depth response Tim, it does seem like I will have to upgrade my hardware, which is unfortunate. But at least I can do some kind of development on this hardware.

Thank you very much for the support and links.

Actually in relation to this - A feature request was put in for Unlit Movement which would greatly improve performance while moving around UE4. Is there any word on this feature?

Hi Sythen,

I’m glad you found the links helpful!

As for the feature request it was decided that it’s not a function that will be implemented into UE4. There may be something similar implemented in the future but nothing is planned at the moment. I apologize if this causes any inconvenience.

Thank you!

Tim
