Out of memory error

I recently subscribed to Unreal Engine 4, downloaded everything on the marketplace, couldn’t wait to get started. I started by looking at the Elemental demo, the project opened fine, however when I hit play, the first time the editor just closed. No error, no nothing, just closed. Tried again and it started to play however I got an out of memory error.

The only time I’ve gotten an out of memory error recently was with Watch Dogs and I fixed that by lowering texture quality. I tried lowering all the settings in the editor from Epic, to High, all the way down to Low, and still get the out of memory error. Any idea what’s going on?

I’m running Unreal Engine 4.2 and my machine specs are below:
Windows 8.1 64 Bit
Intel i5 3570k @ 4.2GHz
8GB DDR3 @ 1600MHz
Nvidia GTX 780 Ti 3GB
1080p monitor

Hi Kandy_Man,

Since this also happened with Watch Dogs I believe it could be a system issue. I have found a few websites with possible solutions.

Also, there seems to be an issue with a memory leak while playing a game in a different resolution than your desktop is set for in Windows 8.1. I would check that first, it seems to be the most simple solution. The site says that Microsoft is aware of the issue and are working on a patch. Before you run the Elemental Demo, go to Edit > Editor Preferences > Play > Play in Standalone Game and change the resolution to match what your monitor is set for. When you hit Play, make sure to hit Play in Standalone Game.

I hope this helps, TJ

Thanks for the quick response. I tried the resolution change. I got a new black window then it closed. I’m also getting crashes in the editor every 5 minutes or so.

Thanks for the links, I’ll try the fixes. Failing that I think I’ll try a clean install of Windows as I’ve been having more and more problems lately.

Is 8GB of RAM the minimum requirement or is it a recommended spec? If it is the minimum requirement I might upgrade to 16GB. Thanks again

We don’t necessarily have any minimum specs listed, only recommended. This is because of the high end demos. I can almost guarantee that you will have issues trying to run them with less that 8 GB of RAM.

Here is the recommended spec list.
