Are there any settings I can adjust to increase the performance of the Material editor?

Hi chaps,

I’ve seen similar questions about version 4.1, but I’m using version 4.2. I’m having a lot of problems with the material editor being achingly slow. It takes such a long time to update the preview window (sometimes more than a minute) when I make any changes. It makes it really difficult to make minor adjustments or experimental changes.

Can you recommend any settings that I can tweak to speed things up, or if a hardware update is required, what kind of hardware is going to give me the best results

Specs are as below:
AMD Athlon II X2 220 2.8Ghz,
10Gb Ram,
Windows 7 (64 bit),
Geforce GTX 760,
250GB SSD

As you can see, the processor is pretty weak. But my computer deals with every other aspect of the UE4 editor just fine, as well as 3ds max, maya, mudbox etc. and can run Bioshock Infinite etc. on highest settings, so it seems strange that just the materials editor is so slow. Can I turn down the quality of the rendering in the preview window for quicker updating or something?

Thank you

Hi monkeymilkman,

The material editor renders differently than the rest of UE4 and other 3D programs. It renders directly to the GPU and constantly updates that information. Your issue is almost definitely caused by having a dual-core processor vs the recommended quad-core.

You can try this and it may help. In the Preview Window of the material editor toggle Real-time to Off.

Hope it helps, TJ
