Light Propagation Volumes are making problems with VR

Hi,
we have huge problems with Light Propagation Volumes in VR. Our scene looks fantastic but the performance is bad. But even when we have good frame rates stuttering always occurs.

It would be fantastic if this problem could be solved in the next updates.

Best regards, Andreas

I’m pretty sure, that LPV is still experimental, and was not tailored with VR in mind.

Still experimental…Since 2 years. It´s really disappointing that EPIC don´t give us a powerfull real-time GI system…

LPV is maintained by Epic but was developed by Lionhead Studios before they closed. To my knowledge there are no plans to add additional functionality to it, at least not at this time.

Are there any plans to develop a powerful real-time GI system for the Unreal Engine 4? This is the most desired feature when you are talking with people about the Unreal Engine 4 graphic quality. The best solution which is currently available is Nvidia’s VXGI. But this technique is not officially integrated.

One day maybe.

For a subset of people developing it’s a highly requested feature but I wouldn’t say that’s the case for everyone. Right now Nvidia and Enlighten offer good solutions until it’s a native feature. If your project 100% depends on it I would suggest licensing one of these.

Enlighten is integrated into Unity 5. This is a great advantage compared to the Unreal Engine 4. Enlighten is not affordable for normal projects with the Unreal Engine because the license costs are too high. For this reason I do not understand why Epic won’t develop a good real-time GI solution.

Hi Tim,

I heard that Rare is using LPV in Sea of Thieves. Do you have any information on how much they improved it and if how much of that will be available in a future stock UE version?
