HillTree_02 cause editor freeze

Everything in the open world demo content is working for me except for this, hilltree_02 freezes my editor permanently and its not cause of texture size, all other objects can be placed in map just fine.

for one there is no source when you hover over the tree mesh, and the M_Customdepth_billboard are giving me SM5 errors where its telling me

Error [SM5] (Node TransformPosition) input must be a vector (1.00000000: float) or a scalar (if source is Tangent)

not sure if this is root cause of problem or if this is a second problem if i attatch the transfromposition nodes to object scale nodes seems to fix the billboard errors however im still not able to place this one tree “hilltree_02”

also HillTree_Tall_02 works just fine

after deleting the hilltree_02 mesh i no issues wtf?

Since it is asking for vectors, I replaced the single constant vector with 3vectors of the same default value and it fixed the issue.

No unfortunately this did not fix my issue. altho there were no SM5 issues when i went and loaded a fresh open kite demo into a project, i still get the same freeze even after replacing the constants with 3vector ones. now i noticed there were two instances in the billboard where i needed to change these vectors to 3vectors so a total of 4 changes and no matter what combo i change or leave the same i still get the same issue.

just out of curiosity when you hover over the Hilltree_02 mesh where is the source comming from? all other meshes have one except hilltree_02

also could you post a full view of you nodes? maybe there is somthing else im not seeing?

This file actually hangs up my project during packaging and always results in a hard freeze even though its not present in the level, just in Content.

Still no official fix for this? I just discovered this free content today, hoping to use it, and I can’t even double-click to look at any of the trees, let alone use them.

I’m getting the same issue. I have enough memory and it works perfectly for every other asset, even with the 8K textures. I’m trying to work on a project and I’m trying to move this to my own assets folder in content, but it just freezes for me. How can I do the 3vector fix? The bug report says its resolved but it still has the issue. I’m running 4.18

Same here. I’m running on an iMac so I thought that might be it (although I’m currently running 32GB of RAM…), but it sounds like many other people are having these issues. Is there any fix for this yet? I can’t even get to the solution offered by above because it freezes when I just try to access the trees in content.

I am using 4.19.2 and the only tree from the kitedemo that doesn’t freeze the editor is the ScotsPineTall_01. The other ones don’t work!
I downloaded the kitedemo content less than a month ago.

I’m also experiencing severe issues with HillTree_02 on 4.19.2. Editor doesn’t even start when directly loading into a level referencing the asset. Last log line is trying to build the asset’s mesh. Sufficient RAM and cores available, so definitely not a hardware problem. Also not related to its shader, as the original bug ticket states. This needs a new bug ticket.

v4.22.3 same issue.
Hill tree has no source and locks the editor upon any action taken to the static mesh file. Freshly updated and added to a project yesterday (Sept 08, 2019).

I’m looking at a few options … workarounds. I’ll post back if I have any positive results.

(v.4.23) I can’t even delete the kite demo content from the project because this also freezes the editor.

Please fix this?? Still freezes editor just double clicking on any of the trees. Does anyone know why this happens? I have 32 cores, 2x 2070 SUPERS, and 128GB RAM. This should not be happening!

Somehow this issue is now in the latest version of .24

Removing the asset (HillTree_02.uasset) allows for the editor to load. Placing the asset back into the content folder causes an instant lock of the editor.

The project was working fine prior to .24.3, so this is probably an engine regression brought on by the version change.

The log shows the hangup as
[2020.04.23-03.57.01:276][597]LogStaticMesh: Building static mesh HillTree_02…
The editor then just hangs forever with no progress in the “loading package” progress bar above 70%.

I guess Epic just released those free assets they don’t care about a fix, on the contrary since there are no good free trees anywhere some people make good money if it doesn’t work.

the fact that it used to work and now doesn’t makes me believe even more that epic really regretted sharing that content for free so they put this problem in…
