Unreal Engine crashes when importing .obj file

Hi. The engine crashes whenever I try to import an.obj file. I tried to import at least 20 different files which I’ve downloaded from at least 6 different websites and it always crashed. Fbx versions of the same models import just fine, but not the obj.

Be more specific. What version of the engine are You using, OS? Maybe attach a file You have issues with.

I’ve just successfully imported an .OBJ file. And a heavy one.

And a crash report?

Also 4.14.3 is here.

“Fixed! UE-40229 Editor Crashes when importing some FBXs with multiple Material IDs in 4.14.2” (OBJ imported same way)

UE 4.14.1. Windows 10. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a huge or tiny file. It crashes regardless. None of the files I have meet the minimum size limit. But even if I could upload one I strongly suspect it will not do any good. When it’s happened 30 times already, with files from multiple sources, which, by the way, import just fine to UE4 on another, weaker machine (I’ve had the chance to check since posting this question), it tells me that the problem I have is likely due to issues with the UE installed on my machine.

Hi 00Shahaf,

As S-ed pointed out, having a test asset really helps narrow things down. It really does so more quickly than one of us on the support staff having to try and guess what another person would have set up to cause the crash. There are a lot of options and applications out there that go into making an .obj so it’s likely what crashes for you wouldn’t crash for me. While it’s certainly not a requirement to post a test asset, it can really help speed up the testing process and get something reported if it’s not already.

Can you also upgrade your engine version to 4.14.3. The Jira, UE-40229, fixed an import issue with assets using multiple material IDs that may be the root issue you’re seeing.

After you upgrade and try this version, if you’re still getting the crash please include a basic asset, if not the asset detailed steps to recreated the asset and reproduce your issue, Also include the call stack and project log from the crash so that we can procede in investigating the crash.

Thank you!

Tim
