Upgrading instead of downloading new version

Any time there’s a new version of UE4, i download it from the launcher (currently at 4.2).

Problem is, it seems that the versions are not performing an upgrade (they install each new version separately, including all marketplace content i have downloaded for earlier versions).

Is there a way to perform an upgrade ? What is the best way to keep only the latest version every time?

Hi lysergide -

The reason that the Engine doesn’t do an upgrade is we wanted to give developers the option of changing to the latest build of the engine, because, as a developer a good way into a project, you may not want to take the risk of updating code which works for you in your project only to find that it doesn’t work in a newer version or that you may have to spend development time tweaking to the new specifications.

If however you are just learning and experimenting with the engine and do not mind the change in the editor from version to version. I would recommend uninstalling the editor completely and re-installing from your account page when an update comes out this should not effect downloaded content or your own projects but will reset the launcher and engine to the newest version only installed on your CPU. For the downloadable Marketplace content the same would be try delete the content directories and redownload and it will automatically only have the newest version.

You can always go back to an older version through the launcher, but you will have to re-download that version of the engine again.

One thing I would like to point out, in my opinion, is that if you just always want to use the latest engine version, the best thing to do currently is probably to install it when it comes out, check your projects and work all function with the new engine ok, and fix up where necessary. Then use the uninstall link for the old engine in the Launcher to remove it.

That way, whenever you download the latest version, you will have less to download as the launcher only downloads new installation data, meaning if you have 4.1 installed when you download 4.2, the 4.2 download should be smaller than if you download it fresh
