Please help me figure out why UE4 keeps crashing

For quite some time now, through the last few version of the editor, I have experienced countless numbers of crashes. I’ve not been able to tie them to any one thing. Sometimes, it has crashed when I’ve simply clicked on an item. Other times while switching windows. I am attaching the most recent crash log. If you need more information, I will provide what I can.

It is perplexing, to say the least.link text

Hey ,

I see that you have a device ‘HUNG’ in your crash log. If I had your callstack I would be able to say for sure but my guess is that your crash is related to this: Unreal Engine Issues and Bug Tracker (UE-42280)

In most cases users found that clicking “view options” in the content browser and disabling real time thumbnails helped fix the issue.

If that doesn’t make the engine more stable comment here and I will offer some additional workarounds.

Thank you for answering  I’m curious to know where on the pc I obtain the stack, so that I can send it to you?

When the editor crashes you should get a crash reporter window that tells you your epic/machine(login) ID and gives a stack. Otherwise it will say that you don’t have the necessary debugging symbols to show a callstack.

If that is the case you can provide your machine(login) ID and I can look up your stack in our database provided you submitted a crash report.

Hello again,

I finally got around to setting the editor to show the stack in the crash window. I am attaching a copy of it, for your consideration.

Thank you!

for the callstack. We actually have combined all of the various d3d issues into a collective ticket here: Unreal Engine Issues and Bug Tracker (UE-42280)

You may try the list of workarounds mentioned in the details. I personally have seen the best results from users when they disabled realtime thumbnails.

Unfortunately, at this time all we can offer are workarounds to the issue until the investigation is done.

Ed

Thank you Ed. I’m curious to know: are y’all experiencing the same problem in-house? Is a more robust system less likely to experience these crashes? I did disable the realtime thumbnails after you recommended that action in a previous message, but though the frequency of crashes has diminished, I am still experiencing crashes. However, I will check in to the link you provided above, as regards workarounds.

Unfortunately, we are having a lot of difficulties reproducing certain D3D crashes. It is definitely hardware dependent, but I’m not entirely sure what configuration of hardware/OS/Drivers will cause the crash. When I was looking through crash logs we had a huge range of GPUs that were getting the crash. When I looked at a sample size of about 100 GPUs the ones with the highest frequency of crashes were GTX 500-600 series as well as the GTX 1060 oddly enough.

Hope that helps.

Hi! Is there any progress on this issue since 2017? I have the same problem on my brand new GeForce RTX2060 playing ARK.
