Search help

  • Simple searches use one or more words. Separate the words with spaces (cat dog) to search cat,dog or both. Separate the words with plus signs (cat +dog) to search for items that may contain cat but must contain dog.

Crash when using UTextRenderComponent in Code

I have a question and a Problem regarding UTextRenderComponent.

First. I have a C++ Class, which inherits from AActor. So in the Header i include Actor.h of cause. I have no problem using UStaricMeshComponent, but the Compiler saiys me: identifier "UTextRenderComponent" is undefned.

So I looked up the dicumentation and used the include: "Runtime/Engine/Classes/Components/TextRenderComponent.h".

Now it's working, but thats a bit strange cause MeshComponent is working, but no the TextRender?

Now to my error:

After making a Variable in my Header:

    UTextRenderComponent nameText;

My editor crashes when i try to compile. I double checked everything. It was working fine before, I changed 2 Lines only The Include and the new Variable.

I can compile in Visual Studio without any Problem. But Unreal Crash, even if I delete the Binaries and let Unreal recreate them.

My Project is a bit longer, so i dont wanna post 100 lines of Code, but I'm 100% sure, before everythign was working and after I add the UTextRenderComponent line its crashing (it works again when i comment it)

Shouldn't it be UTextRenderComponent* nameText; (added the pointer)?

But I still dont know why I need to include the Header to use it.

Because you didn't forward declare the pointer class. The declaration should look like this class UTextRenderComponent* nameText;, then you can remove the header include from the header and add it to the source file.

But I dont need to do with with UStaticMeshComponents. I can just use them. I can write: UStaticMeshComponent *someMesh; Without any additional forward decleration or includes. Thats why it's strange that I need for the TextRender

This is because the UStaticMeshComponent is forward declared somewhere in Actor.h, that you include. So the compiler knows that the type exists and you don't need to tell him again.
