Question regarding minimum system specs

Hey. I’m looking for a laptop, and I’ll probably get an ultrabook because of the light weight. All of them seem to come with either Intel HD series of graphics or Intel Iris. Has anyone tried how the editor will run on these GPUs?

Running UE4 will not be the main use of the laptop, I have a powerful desktop for that. Just wondering whether it’s possible to run the editor at least decently (definitely not in real-time mode)? Or should I trade some features of the ultrabook to get a GT 630/640, or will that help at all? It’s been a while since I owned a laptop, but seems like Iris 5100 is actually slightly more powerful than a GT630M, at least according to benchmarks.

Will probably be mainly used for shaders and related technical stuff (blueprints etc), something to have by when I get those crazy shader ideas when not in front of my PC

Hi Santewi,

I’ve put together a couple of links below that will help you with your decision. The first is from the community and their hardware setups and user experience while the second is a way to scale down the engines capabilities to give you a better experience while running on laptops or lower than minimum spec hardware.

The community has put together a forum thread with their machine setups and what their experience is with the engine. The post is titled: [Compatibility List] Unreal 4 - Hardware Feedback]

Take a look there and see if anything matches what you are have or is close. This will give you a better idea than I could about what will best work for you.

I do want to mention as well that the engine is capable of scaling the detail down to give you a better user experience but it will lack features when this is done though. I’m linking the Engine Scalability Settings here to see if this may assist you in what you’re looking for.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

Thank you!

Tim
