Pumping of Temporal Antialiasing

Currently we trying to update our game from 4.14.3 to 4.15.0.

In 4.15 we get a really annoying pumping effect.

  • It only appears when the camera is moving.
  • It appears at the edges of objects over the sky especially at the vegetation.
  • It only appears when r.PostProcessAAQuality is set to 4, 5 or 6. When setting the value to 3 all is fine.

Is there any explanation for this behaviour?

Could you please provide either a screenshot or a short video demonstrating this “pumping” effect. This is so that while testing I can confirm that I am getting the same issue.

I tested this in a blank project with r.PostProcessAAQuality set to different values and this tree asset but didn’t get the same result as you.

That could mean a few things, either the problem lies with a project setting (Cvars included), your tree asset, post process in the level, or some other feature in that level.

A good way to narrow stuff like this down is to test in a blank project with only the asset in question. Depending on the results you can narrow down. If the issue goes away then it is specific to your project for example. Next thing to try would be to test in a new default map and if the problem goes away then you know it is specific to your map.

Let me know how things go and if this is a project specific issue or you can test with my tree and see if that gets problems too.
