Bug : black icons on new material instances

I’m getting black icons for newly created material instances. I did some tests with the icon and found that it appears to be drawing the icon not as a sphere like it normally would, but is drawing the material on a flat quad. The lighting on that quad is from behind so it’s getting basically zero light and thus appears pitch black.

I don’t know what’s causing it as it’s root material has countless instances and none of them are coming out black except the two most recently created ones. I asked a friend who is working on a completely different project at a completely different company and he’s found that his icons were drawing fine but just recently they all started drawing black as well.

We’re both running UE 4.15 and in the forward rendering mode if that makes any difference.

I also saw this bug (UE-42239) that sounds a little similar but i can’t tell if it’s related or not. Could easily be unrelated so i’m posting this bug.

The repro steps for me :

  • already have preexisting materials from previous unreal builds.
  • right click on empty space in the content browser and choose NEW MATERIAL INSTANCE
  • choose the path to the original material and it should already be drawing the icon as solid black even thought it shouldn’t.

Hey indigosm,

I just created a brand new project using starter content and followed the steps you provided. I am not seeing the black thumbnails or preview material within the instance window.

Would you be willing to provide me with exact steps and screenshots so I can get it to occur on my end?

Let me know if you further questions.

Thanks,
