Is "Reality Engine" trademarked by Epic Games?

This is a complicated subject and not one that’s appropriate for an in-depth discussion on AnswerHub. At a high level I would say that Epic would likely oppose the use of a mark REALITY ENGINE in a way that would likely cause confusion due to similarity to UNREAL ENGINE.

In 2005, Epic Games acquired all Reality Engine intellectual property from Artificial Studios, which I assume includes a trademark for the name. As far as I can tell, Epic Games did not continue marketing Reality Engine as it was and worked on moving all customers to UE instead. If that is the case, I am curious if the name Reality Engine is up for grabs either in general or even from Epic Games.

I emailed support and they sent me here. You make a good point about the name similarities. My target market is a bit different than Epic’s, but that does not change your point at all. I am still in very early development and have been using “Reality” as a code name. Do you have any advice for where I could go to get a more solid answer? Otherwise, I will assume it is a big fat no.

I’m Epic’s attorney so I’m the best person to talk to in terms of Epic’s position. But you’re sort of asking for advice on a subject where we may be opposed, so in that sense I’m representing Epic’s interests rather than yours. I guess I can say that Epic would prefer that you not use the mark REALITY ENGINE.

Ah, okay. No it is. Thanks!
